Sunset Over a Calm Sea

This was taken around the same time as Post-apocalyptic Sunset but this image is more true to what the eye saw. Two shots, exposed for foreground and background were merged with a layer mask in Elements, simulating the use of an ND gradient filter. Processing was then finished off in Lightroom.

Post-apocalyptic Sunset

To the eye, this was a gentle, pastel-coloured sunset but I wanted to come up with something more punchy.

This was shot auto-bracketed (+/- 2EV). The frames were enfused to a single image with improved dynamic range and this image was then processed in Lightroom.

Colourful Canoes

These canoes, beached in the old Hermanus harbour, are used for whale watching trips. It must be fantastic to get close to the whales in such small craft and there is probably great opportunity for photographing them; but I don’t fancy the idea of taking my camera out on the ocean in a canoe.

Misty Morning Fogbow

I was out before sunrise but it was a misty morning and the sunrise was not visible so I spent some time taking close-up shots of rocks in the mist. As I walked back up the beach the mist started to clear and this rainbow, or fogbow; as white rainbows are known, appeared. I was fortunate that my 10mm lens was wide enough to capture both ends.

This is the rainbow/fogbow mentioned in my previous post.

Misty Morn

I took this shot at Paternoster around sunrise. I was initially disappointed that it was misty but in the end it worked out as I got this shot and one of an impressive rainbow, or fog bow, as I’m told this kind is called.

Rocks at Rooiels

Went back out to Rooiels on Sunday, with Mela this time, and spent a couple of hours walking, sitting watching the sea and of course taking photographs.

Roach Army

I was out on the rocks by the sea at Rooiels this afternoon taking some photos when I saw the strangest thing. I spotted a cockroach on a rock near my feet and when I looked at the rocks a little further away, they were crawling with hundreds, if not thousands of small cockroaches. The strange thing is that most of them were moving in the same direction, forming a column that swarmed over the rocks with a definite sense of purpose. I have never seen anything like this before. I wonder what they were doing? Migrating perhaps or heading towards a food source? I didn’t smell anything that would indicate a dead creature nearby but there was a fair amount of decomposing kelp between the rocks there. This is what they looked like.
