The 100+ is back

Earlier at home I was seeing actual unread message counts in Google Reader but now I’m logged in at work and I’m seeing the familiar old 100+ for tags with more than a hundred new posts. “They’re coming to take me away, ha ha, hee, hee!”

Google Reader loses the 100+

Cool, I just noticed that Google Reader has had a little update and no longer displays 100+ when there are over a hundred new posts in a tag.  My All Items is currently showing 904 unread.

WTF is up with Google?

I just launched a Google search from the Firefox search bar and was presented with a screen like this.

After entering the CAPTCHA code I saw a message about being redirected, but simply came back to the page above.  Thinking it may be related to using the Firefox search bar I went to the Google home page and searched from there.  Again I got the CAPTCHA but this time the code was accepted when I entered it and I got my search results.  I hope that this is not something we will see every time we do a search from now on.

Can anyone else read this logo?

Scissors are out of control

Another Western Cape learner has been stabbed with a pair of scissors. A spokesman for PFFSSU has claimed that this is clearly the action of a third force seeking to hasten the eradication of scissors from our schools. The education department has been calling for this since another student was stabbed to death with a pair of scissors earlier this week.

Dugmore wants scissors banned at schools

According to SABC News, Cameron Dugmore, the Western Cape education minister, is looking at banning scissors being brought into schools throughout the province.

What about other dangerous pointed items, like say, pens? Not to mention the dangers of school uniforms; you could strangle someone with a tie. Where does it stop?

Mixed Messages

Considering that You and Huisgenoot are little more than English and Afrikaans versions of the same magazine, it is odd that the latest issues have similar headlines, differing in one way, proclaiming that SMS (Huisgenoot) or MXit (You) destroyed someone’s marriage. Is MXit really just the same thing as SMS? If so then why are we seeing reports of MXit, but not SMS, being used for nefarious purposes. Why not lay the blame at the feet of SMS too?

Not So Proudly South African

Trash 3I live in Strand, near Cape Town, a mere one to two hundred metres from the Lourens River, a small river that is little more than a stream unless it’s in spate. I don’t often go for walks by the river, preferring the beach, but today I decided near sunset to go for a walk by the river with Bonnie, our dog. Of course I took my camera along and was able to record the disgusting state of the river course.
Trash 4
There are plastic bags, bottles, tins, food wrappers, etc., festooning the trees and rocks in the course, where they have been deposited by flood waters, after being swept downstream. Whether these have been discarded by the bergies (homeless people) that live along the river banks at various points, or simply thrown away indiscriminately by people as they finish their food or drink I can’t say.

Trash 2Other things I saw seem more deliberately discarded, like this purple plastic framework of a broken toy. Things like this are probably left by the bergies who move around the area, particularly on garbage day, collecting rubbish that they can sell to recycling companies. They have a disturbing tendency of smashing things they find to remove parts with a value and simply leaving the rest lying wherever they are. While I don’t begrudge these people the right to make a living, and am impressed by the way they organise themselves with different people handling different types of recyclables, it would be really nice if they would be a little less careless about the mess they leave behind.
Trash 1
The worst things I saw though are things like this pile of newspapers, neatly bundled and packaged up into bags, before being dumped by the river. Sadly dumping like this can’t be blamed on those who may litter because of poverty or an upbringing where care for the environment was never a factor. These, and the piles of garden refuse are dumped by residents of the neighbourhood, the very people who should care most about the cleanliness of the local environment. It seems though that people care so little for the environment that they will simply dump their trash anywhere as long as it is out of sight of their property. I hope the moron that dumped those newspapers reads this post. Do you realise that you could have gotten rid of these newspapers by leaving them outside your house where they would have been collected by the bergies, who would not only remove them for you but earn a little money in the process?

Is Your Sister Hot

Yesterday, just before leaving work, I heard a ruckus on the other side of the office. Passing by there on my way out the door I discovered it was WeZ and Stilks debating whether it is possible for a guy to tell whether his sister is hot or not. Stilks says not but WeZ and the others around them all said it was possible. Liv was there to give a female perspective and sided with the others. Stilks seems to think that it is unnatural to even consider whether your sibling is hot or not. I think it is quite possible for anyone to recognise and acknowledge the beauty and sexiness of a sibling, or even a parent or child, without actually feeling sexual attraction towards them. What do you think?

Flu Season Is Upon Us

I think I’m coming down with my first dose of flu for the year. Was feeling really tired yesterday and just managed to stay awake through CSI last night, then went to bed at 10h00. Never even touched my computer. Woke up vomiting around 00h40; but it wasn’t serious, here comes last night’s dinner kind of vomiting, but just a small amount of clear, acid fluid. I’m guessing it was probably phlegm from a post nasal drip or perhaps some kind of gastric reflux. I eventually dragged myself out of bed at 06h50 this morning with a sore throat and still feeling tired. By the time I’d had a shower and eaten some breakfast the throat was feeling better so I took an Advil for the stuffy head and brought a bottle of Andolex throat spray to work with me lest the sore throat return. I suspect that this will get worse over the next few days. The rest of the family seem to have some kind of bug too, and with all the benefits of central air conditioning at work, this will undoubtedly be shared with my colleagues; mind you that might be where it came from in the first place.
