I Hate Nero

I must have been insane when I bought a copy of Nero 8 almost a year ago.  Perhaps my judgement was clouded by tales of Nero being the ultimate tool for working with CD & DVD media.  How I wish I had saved myself some money and just looked for an open source application then.

I really just use Nero Express most of the time to burn discs as well as Nero ImageDrive to manage virtual drives that I use to load ISO images from my hard drives.  I have tried on occasion to look into some of the other applications but the user interfaces are over-complicated and the documentation is frankly shocking; so I never got very far.

The one thing that I have tried to do a few times, today being the latest; and which has prompted this rant is to copy a data DVD to an ISO file that I can later mount with the aforementioned ImageDrive.  Having previously used applications like Magic ISO Maker I would expect this to be a simple operation involving just a click or two and the selection of a file to save the disc image to, but no; Nero makes this so complicated that each occasion I have had a need to do it has prompted a session of searching for help with Google, only to end in frustration and the use of some other piece of software.

In this latest episode I recalled that LifeHacker covered the Five Best CD and DVD Burning Tools recently in their Hive Five series.  I grabbed a copy of the portable version of the top pick, InfraRecorder and had it up and running after a simple unzip; portable applications are great.  Lo and behold, there was the very thing I expected, a simple button that opens a dialogue, asks you to select the source and the destination, then gets on with the job without further ado.

InfraRecorder

So, as far as I’m concerned Nero AG might as well strike me off their mailing list right now; they’re just wasting electrons by sending me e-mails suggesting I shell out more money for Nero 9, which is probably even more bloated and complex than Nero 8 is.

Verity needs your help

I’ve blogged before about Verity, a singer from Cape Town, who is taking the unusual route of raising money for her first album by pre-selling copies rather than signing her soul away to a record company.  I was prompted to post about this again after receiving her latest newsletter, in which she says;

My first single “Angel” is starting to get playlisted by various radio stations around SA so I am looking forward to seeing how it does. You can find the song available to   DOWNLOAD OR LISTEN HERE…  and I would love to hear what you think.

I also have a web interview that my good friend Bruce Muzik did for his website that you might ENJOY WATCHING HERE…

We are in the final push to sell the last 185 copies on my site. If you enjoy listening to “Angel” and the interview inspires you, then please mail the links to your friends so that they can see if they would like to join the Future Owner family and help us get the album ready to post by the end of May if all goes well!

Please buy a copy of the album.  Help this brave and talented woman to meet her goal and remember that by doing so you are also helping her to help others.  That’s right, a portion from each sale goes to charity.

A response from FOL

I received a reply from FriendsOfLive and it seems I had missed the info on their site mentioning that there would be two versions of Awake, with or without DVD.  They have passed my mail on to the marketing guys to try and find out why the CD/DVD combo does not seem to have been released in South Africa.

Live is a great band so I suggest that whether you know their music or not, you go out and buy at least Awake :: The Best Of Live, if not their other albums too.

I Feel Ripped Off

In my post Awake, I mentioned that I had received an e-mail from FriendsOfLive, the web site of the band Live, notifying of a new release. Extracting the essence, it said;

The new CD/DVD combo package, “Awake, The Best of LIVE” hits stores worldwide on November 2nd

Worldwide was apparently not to be taken literally because it was yesterday before I finally found product on a local store’s shelves. Naturally I bought a copy, rushed it home, only to find that it was not a CD/DVD combo as promised but merely a CD, with a slightly different track listing to the US release. Needless to say, I am not amused and sent the e-mail below to FriendsOfLive. I suppose there is a slight hope that it ends up with someone that can actually make a difference and help to provide better uniformity for future worldwide releases.

This is the e-mail I sent as a reply to the one I received from them.

After almost daily visits to record stores here in South Africa, I finally found Awake on the shelves yesterday and bought a copy. The packaging didn’t say anything about a DVD but I remembered that the latest Linkin Park CD/DVD was in a standard jewel case so I wasn’t too worried. Imagine my disappointment, that soon turned to disgust, when I found no DVD on opening the case.

Why would the ZA release not have the DVD? Is this to be taken as a message that the band sees us as second class fans, not worthy of receiving what fans elsewhere do. I seem to remember that there was some extra with The Distance To Here that was also not available with the ZA release. After having bought every one of Live’s albums (some twice after the first copies were stolen) I am beginning to wonder if I should continue to do so.

I love Live’s music, but the marketing/distribution of it really sucks. To be told that the release will be a CD/DVD combo when in fact it is only a CD makes me wonder if the album might not more aptly be titled, “Awake :: The Best Of LIES”

Awake

Just received the following by e-mail from Friends of Live.

LIVE fans…it’s coming! The new CD/DVD combo package, “Awake, The Best of LIVE” hits stores worldwide on November 2nd, less than 2 weeks away!!

The album is a CD/DVD combination. The CD contains 19 of LIVE’s most memorable songs, including a cover of the Johnny Cash tune, “I Walk The Line” and the previously unreleased “We Deal in Dreams.” The DVD contains 22 videos, plus an album by album commentary by Ed Kowalczyk!
